James Kirk wandered the hall of his new vessel. The USS Enterprise was one of the most prestigious ships that Starfleet had to offer and the fact that it fell into the hands of someone who'd only been in the Academy for three years and was suspended when he first boarded for "cheating" in an exam kind of irked the big wigs. His predecessor, Admiral Pike, had once said : "Your father was captain of a starship for 8 minutes. He saved 800 lives. I dare you to do better." Ever since, James had always strived to be better than he was, to become a better captain. Already, he'd defeated a Romulan ship from the futre than was at least 10 times the size of the NCC-1701 model of the Enterprise.
He'd saved every life on Earth with the aid of his crew.
But no matter how much aid his crew gave him, he wasn't ready for the biggest challenge the Enterprise had to offer: Boredom. There were facilities on the Enterprise, with recorded movies and TV shows, gyms, almost endless activities. However, it was near impossible for James to enjoy any of it with his guard up at all times, just in case he ever ran into an ambush again.
Kirk wandered through the halls of the Enterprise, heading for the bridge, he felt like just calling Scotty and having him transport him there. He continued along his merry way, staring at every female officer on the way over. His officers, for the most part, stopped what they were doing when he passed them to stand at attention, causing him to say "At ease" at least 300 times on the way over. Automatic doors slid open to reveal the sleekly designed bridge and his chair. Kirk sat down on the soft leather that lined it and slapped on the commlink:
This is Captain Kirk speaking. While I'm flattered at the respect all of you guys have for me, to the extent that you stand at attention when I pass you in the hallways, could ya stop? t's slowing things down around here. Thank you, Kirk out. He looked around the bridge, Bring up the viewscreen and give me a status report.

Charlie hadn't been on the Enterprise that long, but she'd been on it long enough to fear for her life at the decisions of her captain. Particularly the one where they almost got sucked into the black hole along with the Romulan ship. Charlie wasn't too keen on death, though she'd toyed with it many times. She was an adventurous girl who scared her mother on more than one occasion trying to do something reckless for even the most brave and coordinated. Smart as she was, she was not coordinated. For years it was something she strove to overcome.
It was not that she perceived Kirk as a bad captain. On the contrary, he was quite clever, if not a little reckless. Ironically, she found this to be a bad thing when captaining a ship (not that she would be much different). She was incredibly skeptical of him as a person though. She wasn't too keen on getting to know the arrogant man she saw on the surface. What was his story? Did she really care? Maybe a little. Her curiosity as to how he achieved his current position was insatiable, but she would never admit that to anyone, especially him. She didn't WANT to get to know him, but part of her craved to understand HOW he did it all. How did he become captain so quickly? Charlie was brilliant and she'd risen through the ranks quickly, but not so quickly as he did.
She couldn't deny it. She was mildly fascinated.
She'd sat in the bridge, running a hand through her hair as she glared at the screen before her. Things looked clear from Earth to Andromeda and back again. It reminded her vaguely of the stillness before a storm. It was too quiet, too calm, for thins to be completely normal. Nevertheless, she sat back just as the captain himself entered the bridge.
At his announcement, Charlie stifled a snort. She had enough rebellion in her not to even acknowledge his presence until he spoke again. Even then it was obligatory. "No messages from any nearby bases, captain. All is clear." She stated as she tapped the screen and let the holographic map appear on the screen before him. She leaned back, placing her hands behind her head without looking at him a single time.

Uhura had seen Kirk walking towards the bridge. She probably could have caught up with him had she wished. She didn't. She had to admit to herself, the guy was growing on her, but she hadn't really talked to him since her overly emotional display with Spock. He was sure to have SOMETHING to say about it. Nyota smiled to herself. Kirk always had something to say.
The doors to the bridge whooshed open and Uhura entered in time to hear the new ensign's communications report. What was her name? She honestly didn't know.
"Captain."
Uhura murmered under her breath, acknowledging him with a slightly amused smile and a nod as he finished his bulletin to the crew. She stepped smartly to the unknown woman's station and held out a hand.
"I'm Lieutenant Uhura. You're new, right?"

Charlotte looked up with surprise at the Lieutenant of whom she'd heard much about but she'd yet to meet. Nyota Uhura. She had a talent of the tongues. Charlotte had never been very good with languages nor was she very interested in them though she had to commend the strong woman before her for her fine work. She'd yet to hear of anyone who'd mastered the languages that Uhura had.
A small cordial smile pulled at her thin lips and she shook the Lieutenant's hand. "Hello Lieutenant. I'm Ensign Rousseau. Yes, I am rather new." She blushed lightly at that.
Charlie hated feeling like the subordinate worker monkey, but standing next to Lieutenant Uhura, she couldn't help feeling inadequate. Despite all her strengths, Uhura seemed an incredibly powerful woman and even Charlie had her qualms about her position in the ranks. Yes she was young and yes she would become more respected with time, but until then she remained feeling small--an ant that her superiors could crush.
The only person she really found solace in was young Ensign Chekov. He was a good and quirky friend and despite the fact his brain was far more advanced than her own and his rank higher than she'd even been close to at his age, she felt she could trust him not to judge her. She could never be sure with everyone else. And Kirk? Well she didn't really care for Kirk's opinion. She was much more keen on impressing the woman before her.

Weird to see someone blush because of me.
Nyota thought to herself. A few short weeks ago, she had been a cadet herself. The fact that she now had a 'reputation' was something of a novelty to her. Smiling encouragingly at the younger woman, She searched for something else to say. Funny, but even though she could talk to nearly anyone in the galaxy, she could never think of anything interesting to say. She noticed Ensign Rousseau looking briefly at Kirk and smirked. She bent over and spoke under her breath.
"Do you have a thing for our Captain, over there?"
She couldn't deny that he was physically attractive, after all. Even if his personality was so far removed from what she looked for in a mate that it was almost ridiculous. Then again, as a woman dating a vulcan, almost any human male was going to pale in comparison.

Charlie had to stifle a very loud incredulous laugh, her fingers clamping over her mouth as her eyes widened in surprise. That's what she thought of her opinion of Kirk. It was so incredibly laughable that she almost had tears in her eyes.
She hoped that he hadn't noticed her laughing outburst, but she doubted he hadn't. Such displays didn't go unnoticed on the bridge, unfortunately. Maybe in the mess hall, but not here. Mentally she cursed herself for letting her amusement show so plainly.
She managed to regulate her breathing long enough to reply to the lieutenant with an amused smile. "No, Lieutenant. The farthest thing from it. I'd rather make out with a drunken Niro." She snickered, again placing her thin fingers over her lips to stifle the laughter.
She only had to agree that Kirk was incredibly attractive. He was, but Charlie had always been the girl who didn't care about that. She'd always gone for the cute and quirky type, much like Chekov, though he was too young for her and frankly he seemed more like a little brother than anything else. Besides, Kirk's arrogance was enough to offset any physical attraction she might've had. More or less anyway.

Good. Let's set a course for M-113, Doctor Robert Crater and his wife Nancy are in need of their routine medical exams.
Kirk nodded to Nyota as she greeted him coldly. What was her problem with him? It may have been that he constantly annoyed her for her first name for the most part of their conversations, before Spock called her it right before they left to go on what was essentially suicide mission. That time she didn't even wave him goodbye! He watched the two girls converse from his chair, only about a meter away. They got to talking about him.
Girls! Commanding officer, right here! Come on, at least have the decency to talk smack about me when I'm out of earshot. Where's Bones when you need him?
James stood up and walked over, sitting in an empty chair in between what was usually Sulu's seat (which was currently occupied by a very tired-looking Darnell) to talk to the girls, he stretched out his hand to Rousseau and smiled, Captain James Tiberius Kirk, how are ya? Seriously though: Am I really that repulsive Ms. Rousseau?
Kirk pulled at the black undershirt, so it wasn't balled up at his waist and pulled the gold back over it, Bones always said that Jim was too obsessed with his appearance to be a real Starfleet officer, but the guy had a haircut that looked like something from the 1950s, who was he to talk about appearance? With his stupid space-scrubs... He looked out at the viewscreen again, watching the stars fly past them.

Charlotte bit her lip and raised a skeptical brow at him, the smirk of satisfaction evident on her sharp features. One of her favorite pastimes had always been to tease people, particularly people like Jim Kirk whose natural stature was enough to annoy her to the nth degree. Charlotte realized she was being critical of the handsome captain, but it wasn't something she could easily control.
She glanced down at his outstretched hand, cocking her head at him as if studying him for a long moment. Finally, she shook his hand, a half smile playing on her lips almost mischievously. "I know who you are Captain. I'm not THAT new." She clarified, glancing surreptitiously at the Lieutenant.
She let out a small laugh, clearly pleased to have wounded his ego so much. "No, not THAT repulsive. But it was more fun to bring your ego down a little than let your head grow beyond the size of your ship."
She crossed her arms over her chest feeling even smaller between the Captain and Lieutenant. She'd been on the ship for quite some time, though she'd only been an Ensign for a short amount of that time, but never had she been confronted by this many officers in a casual setting...or as casual as it got on the Enterprise.

If you're new enough to know me, then you know that there aren't enough comments in the entire universe to make my head small enough to fit this ship comfortably. James laughed, So, where'd you go to Academy? I didn't see you when I was in San Francisco. Then again I was only there for three years, before actually beating the Kobayashi Maru test and gaining the rank of Captain on a constitution class starship that holds only the best officers in Starfleet.
See what I mean about the ego, Charlie? Can I call you Charlie, thanks. Kirk asked the girl, with joking arrogance in his tone. People may have told tales of him being a dutiful man, respecting the rules at every turn, but in actuality, anyone inside the Enterprise could tell tales of Kirk's arrogance and his complete disregard for those with higher rankning than him if he felt his choice was the best way to go. In no way, was he above hitting on an Ensign.
He was Jame T. Kirk, people didn't expect anything else!

She quirked a challenging brow at him and rolled her eyes. She wasn't totally impressed by Jim Kirk. For her, he had a long way to go before he got respect. "Fair enough." She quipped in response, chewing on her bottom lip out of habit.
"Captain, your modesty precedes you." She stated sarcastically, dipping her head in a mock bow. "I came to the academy two years after you did, so I was mostly in the younger classes. Besides, I tended to keep to myself. Studying mostly. I pride myself on my intellectual stamina."
She seethed when he called her by her nickname. On the ship, few people referred to her by Charlie. It was only her closest friends she granted that permission and she'd yet to consider James T. Kirk a close friend. "As long as I can call you Jimmy."

Post by Commander Spock on May 17, 2009 19:15:05 GMT -5
Spock was on his way to the bridge and pretty much ignored all the stares he was getting from other crew members. he made the usual check ups and all around the ship. Everything seemed to be working to his standards. He nodded to certain crew members and finally reached the certain elevator that moved to the bridge with ease. Stepping inside and pressing the few buttons, the elevator moved upward towards the bridge. it only took a matter of seconds.
His face remained the same...expressionless and steady.
The doors slid open quickly and Spock paced inside. His hands to his sides as he moved to his seat. As he moved to his seat, his eyes darted to the head of the captain who sat in the usual chair. His brow arched a little more but he remained calm as the captain made his little statement. A small sigh left Spock's lips, but not enough to where it was noticeable. "I must inform you, Captain, it will be hard to tell them to stop noticing you." He informed in his calm, reasonable voice. his feet still moving to his known seat. "You're the Captain. it is the crew's duty to take note of your presence." With that said, Spock moved to his seat and sat down slowly.
His eyes darted over to Uhura that had also recent arrived to the bridge. A sort of warmness entered his somewhat stressed mind every time his eyes met with hers. But he moved those thoughts and feelings aside and focused on the situation at the time. Seems there was a new member on board the U.S.S Enterprise. Spock tilted his head as Uhura began speaking with the new one. Spock then recalled she was quite new to the ship but at the same time, she'd be well needed and quite noble to the crew. A small...very small smirk made it's way to Spock's lips as he watched Uhura interact with Ensign Rousseau.
Seemed Ensign Rousseau was a bit shy, but all was well as she responded easily. After some mumbling, Spock's smile remained in place. he could tell they were discussing somewhat..female related conversation. His eyes turned to the Captain as he seemed to have listened in as well. He sat up in his seat and typed a few keys in his keyboard. Small sounds echoed from the panel.
The new recruit even knew enough about the Captain to where she knew all about his personality and where his talents seem to lie.. He let a small chuckle leave his throat, but it was as quiet as his first sigh. Seems Kirk was quite proud of himself even though Spock felt it was mostly all by luck....or destiny. He let his ears listen in and continued to do his job. his eyes darted around the keys to the glowing panel before him. After some time, his mind wondered about how the day would flow altogether.

Taking a half step back, Uhura felt herself smiling broadly at first Kirk, then Rousseau. Not one to hide behind his chair, Kirk had stepped in, true to form to 'defend his honor'. It was amusing to say the least. Though...she could see potentially more going on here than just another tail for their fearless Captain to chase. It looked like Kirk may have finally met his match.
A small blip from her console interrupted her thought process and she turned away from the pair.
"Well, Jimmy, i'll have to leave you to it."
She smiled again to assure him the name was meant only in jest, not disrespect and moved across the small space, sinking into her chair and placing her earbud in her ear. The notice she had heard was nothing more than a standard check in from engineering. Filing it away in the logs, she finally allowed herself to glance to her right and smile at Spock. She tried, hard, to ignore him when they were on the bridge. After all, he was a Vulcan and mooning and "emotional displays" were not in his nature. Still though, she seemed to be aware of his movements most of the time. Scanning space around them for random communique, Uhura kept an ear open to hear what the pair in the front of the bridge would say next.

Charlie's brow furrowed as the Lieutenant stepped away to look at her console. She didn't like any situation that left her in the presence of someone she didn't like. She didn't like being in the presence of the bullies who tried to beat up her dear friend Chekov, didn't like being around the people who challenged her physical or mental capabilities, and frankly she didn't like being around Kirk all that much. She suddenly felt very uncomfortable without Nyota's presence. Kirk had no qualms about hitting on any female (including farm animals) and Charlie was not too keen on being a notch in his bedpost. It just wasn't who she was.
So now she was stuck talking to him. She was dutifully at her post and she had no choice but to stay there. She only wished he'd stayed in his captains chair and had ignored her like most officers did if they weren't training her. When she was training, she didn't have to worry about there being any awkward silence because she was being taught. There were lessons and instructions and she usually had a task to do. But here they weren't in battle, weren't flying on a particularly complicated course or any of that. She was on duty and so basically her job was to sit there and look pretty while the ship did it's thing.
"Awesome. Jimmy. It'll catch on, you just wait." She smirked, and leaned back in her chair, cocking her head at the captain with a challenging expression. "Or maybe Jamesy! Which do I like better?" She snickered and tapped her chin mock thoughtfully. "Better yet, Tiberius or TIBBY! Yes, I'll call you Tibby." She crossed her legs and bit her lip, thoroughly enjoying the mangling of the captain's name.
