Doctor McCoy chief medical officer of the Enterprise sat at the head of small conference table in the medical staff room next to his office. Around him was the main medical staff of the Enterprise, his medical staff. It was hard for McCoy to think of them as his. After all he had not selected any of them to be on the crew. They had been chosen by his predecessor and a combination of Star Fleet brass. He had thought briefly about assigning his own team left on its mission but with little time and no candidates he would personally chose to begin with it was easier to just take what he had.
That did not stop him from thinking this medical crew left much to be desired. So much so he felt it was high time they knew it. He cleared his throat loudly to get their attention then began to speak.
“Ok, this is our first real meeting as the medical staff of the Enterprise. You all know who I am by now I’d hope, I’m Doctor McCoy and for now I’m your chief medical officer. I’ll be honest I don’t know a lot of you right now. Believe me that will soon change and I’m going to be barking your names out for all kind of reasons and when I do you’d better be listening. Now I’m going to be more brutally honest with you here and tell you that I did not pick any of you to be on this staff. There are a lot of kids in this group and I know most of you got your medical training from star fleet alone. Many of you have little to no experience treating out in this or any other field. Added all up it’s a dangerous combination of naivety and inexperience. I’m sure I’m no prize for any of you either as I obviously have no experience or skill in command that’s why I’m a doctor not a captain. That’s the bad news the good news is this is a clean beginning for all of us. Whatever you were or were not in the past you are now doctors and nurses on the Enterprise the flagship of star fleet. We will be going up against truly unknown diseases that have never been seen in medical books. We’ll be dealing with alien physiologies completely unlike our own. And we will have to treat patients under every form of imaginable pressure from battle conditions to impossible time constraints. But if you can keep a clear head through all of this, remember your training, and above all male the patients health your top priority. Than we all make it through this just fine.”
McCoy sat back in his chair giving the staff a minute to let his long winded speech soak in on them. “Now let’s go around the table here I want to hear who you are and want your specialty is.”
