The Transportation room, currently under the command of Mr. Pavel Chekov, who had relieved Scotty earlier on in the day, while Chekov was not Chief Engineer, or even an engineer at that, the young man had already proven himself quite adept at handling the transporters. Kirk stepped up onto the platform, his first mission as captain ahead of him. Was it to battle Klingons on the farthest reaches of the universe? To save a planet from being invaded by another? To begin diplomatic reasoning with the present Romulans?
No.
It was none of the above, it was in fact: a check up. A check up on an archaeologist named Robert Crater, who lived on the desolate planet of M-113, a crackpot in Kirk's opinion, the man had spent most of his life searching that planet and had never found anything. All very routine. Crater himself actually didn't want the exam and had abruptly cut them off after Jim had hailed them. The one that both Jim and Bones were interested in, was his wife, Nancy: a woman from McCoy's past.
Darnell jumped up beside James, making sure his pin was on right, before standing behind Kirk and staying there, perfectly still. James jumped off the platform again and slapped on the ship's intercom, remembering one last thing.
Captain Kirk to Commander Spock, we're about to beam down to M-113, you have the bridge Mr. Spock. James got back on the platform. Ready, Bones? Energise.
Everything around him went blue and the desolate planet of M-113 lay before him.

McCoy had been in a bit of a daze all day. Heck he had been in a daze since he’d received the assignment briefing. Sure the mission was a simple medical examination of a two person science team. But when he learned that one of the two was his first college sweet heart it had thrown him for a bit of a loop.
They’d dated for almost a year before their separate carrier paths finally drew the two of them apart. They both soon moved on with their lives and both married other people. But while the witch McCoy married had left him, Nancy and her husband Doctor Carter were still living and work together on this far off planet. While he was happy for his old love he couldn’t help the bit of jealousy and regret he felt about the whole thing.
McCoy did not know how long he had been calibrating the tricorder strapped to his side. He did know he must have gone through the checking procedure at least a dozen times by now before he heard Kirk speak to him directly.
Ready, Bones?
This shook McCoy out of his dazed state quickly. He closed the casing on his tricorder and turned his attention to the captain giving him a simple nod. “Ready Jim, let’s get this mess over with.”
With that Kirk gave the order to engage the transporters. As the machine activating around them McCoy did his best not to think about the technical aspects of having all of his molecules separated and reconstituted. Every time he was on one of these pads he had to go through the list of known safety protocols for the transporter just to keep himself from freaking out at the very thought of it.

Ever since Chekov had used his mathematical prowess and knowledge of gravitational pull to save Kirk and Sulu from meeting a less than desirable end, the captain had trusted him enough to handle the transporters while Mr. Scott was relieved from duty. The young Russian was quite pleased to hear that he'd be taking the Scottish gentleman's place in the Transportation Room that evening.
As he stared intently at the panel's somewhat complicated controls, his thin fingers moved lightning fast over the various touch buttons. He set up the conditions to beam the three men who stood on the transporting platform to meet specifications.
Finally, he looked up with his innocent gray eyes and smiled slightly. "Alright, Captain! Ready on your command."
Kirk gave the go ahead and Chekov pressed a single button. In a matter of seconds, the captain, McCoy, and Darnell had all but disappeared in a brilliant show of lights and particles. Chekov wiped his forehead and gave a bright grin to the woman officer who stood beside him. She looked a little unsure since the Russian was about half her age.

Commander Spock was doing his normal duties and checking on the normal around the ship. Things seemed to be in tip top shape as what more humans would put it. Some from the bridge were, missing but that was all the less to bother Spock. His fingers lightly tapped on the new keys before him. it was all smooth sailing from here. No one on the bridge was being that of an annoyance to him for the time being. Uhura was off doing her own things as was most of the others. Everyone here on the bridge were doing their job. Remaining quite and whatnot. As was Spock.
Then only sound that was heard was the tapping of keys and the beeping of readings aboard the ship. One thing was uncertain for the moment, where was the captain. Normally when he is on board the bridge, that's when conversation seems to verbally erupt. His eyes peered around momentarily and looked back to the keys. There was no sight of the Captain. He let out a small sigh and slowly moved to his feet. Giving a full look out in the bridge, he discovered Chekov was not there as well. His brow rose ever so slightly.
The sudden beeps of an incoming message caught the attention of Spock and he turned to have his face meet the screen. there standing there was Captain Kirk himself along with Dr. Bones and Chekov at the transporter controls. Seems they were going on their own little mission. Nothing wrong with that by Spock's standards. He stood up and held his hands behind his back as he tuned in at the Captain. Seems Spock was now the Captain of the ship until further notice? Spock tilted his head forward slightly and gave a solid nod. "Yes Captain." He informed as a response to show he got the message. "Be sure to be safe, gentlemen." Was all Spock could say at the time towards the men. "It'd be best to get you both back in at least one piece." He gave Kirk a small smile and moved over to the Captain's chair. He slowly moved in to sit in it. His hands met with the control panels on the handles. He was Captain now...for a while. he felt emotionally and prepared for this.
